Boykin Spaniel Goes Pheasant Hunting

My favorite Boykin Spaniel, Karn, and his owners invited me to join them on their Spring pheasant hunt at the Pheasant Farm in Grand Rapids. Having photographed many hunting dogs previously in portrait sessions, I was eager to join this hunt for the chance to learn more about the sport and photograph Karn in action.
It proved to be a bit more difficult than I expected. Trying to photograph a small zig-zagging dog in tall grass was not ideal for photography! This forced me to think a bit more creatively and focus more on capturing the overall experience of the hunt, vs perfect retrievals - which of course is the most desirable photograph.
Here is a collection of images I was pleased with! If you have a dog who loves to hunt or compete in sports, please do not hesitate to reach out. I would love to photograph more pups in action!

** All birds were farm raised and dispatched humanly with a single shot in the air before the dogs retrieved them. The birds will be eaten by the hunters or donated to families in need. Please be respectful of this sport when commenting.**
