It is always a pleasure to photograph families in different chapters of their lives. The Hoppa family enjoyed a photoshoot last year with their two elderly dogs. Now, with the next generation of dogs added into their family, a celebratory photoshoot was needed to capture the quickly growing pups.
Connor and Ember, both from northern Michigan’s breeders, Sutton Labrador Retrievers, were wonderful dogs to photograph! My original plan was to photograph the labs in the sand dunes, and then spend majority of the session on the beach, capturing the Labs in and along Lake Michigan.
Mother Nature decided otherwise, sending our warm Spring day, right back to the Winter windchills of 12oF. The direct wind made it impossible to stay on top of the dunes without losing all feeling in your face and fingers.
With comfort and health in mind - for both the dogs, their owners, and myself - we hiked in between the dunes, staying tucked in the pocket of warmth. Adventuring through the worn foot trails, we stopped to capture a mixture of action shots and stunning sunset portraits.
I was pleasantly surprised that the ease of capturing these images, simply because the bond between the dogs kept them searching for or watching each other. All I had to do was choose the location and lighting, and then send the Lab not being photographed in the direction I wanted the other one to look. Capture a few photos, praise and release the dogs to play again, and continue hiking to the next location. Easy-peasy, but incredibly rewarding with the resulting photos!
