It is ALWAYS a joy to photograph for Kaizen Corgis in Belleville, MI. Our beloved Sir Winston, a now 4 year old, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is from Kaizen Corgis, and these pups are out of the same father! I jumped at the opportunity to snuggle 14 puppies and photograph their sweet, sweet faces.
The day we photographed was super hot, temperatures reaching into the 90’s with high humidity. Even in the shade, the pups were antsy, not agreeing to snuggles with littermates, and wanted only to cause chaos with each other or belly flop in the cool, shaded grass. They kept launching themselves out of the truck and off my little bench, summersaulting through the grass and booking it as fast as they could, and making a great escape back to their littermates!
THANKFULLY - I had an assistant with me. She earned the title of ‘Professional Puppy Wrangler,’ helping wrangle the pups and placing them back to where I needed them for photos. This allowed me to stay laying face first in the grass, ready to capture their sweet expressions in the millisecond their attention puppy brains paused to think.
At one point, we had several puppies secured in an upside down laundry basket, an extra wooden box on the top weighing it down, with the next puppies to be photographed in it. The puppies in the basket jail below gnawed at the basket tines, while the pups in the box above, perched like chicks in a nest, calculating if they could leap or if it was better to stay put. It wasn’t my original goal for photos, but I began photographing the pups in the box, capturing candid moments of the pups interacting together. (No pups were allowed to leap out!)
We were exhausted at the end of the photoshoot, kicking back in the shade and watching the freed pups scamper here and there, pounce on each other with their stubby stompers, and enjoy Mama Molly’s milk bar. It was like herding cats when it was time to gather them up, and return them to their air conditioned welping boxes! I think we counted, double counted, and then triple counted, to ensure all pups had made it back from their grand adventure. All happy from the enrichment - myself included.
