My best friend, Alisa, owns the prettiest Arabian, in all of West Michigan, and you can’t convince me otherwise! I look forward to photographing her horse, Gharib Al Shaqab, aka “Qatar,” bred by Al Shaqab, Doha Qatar, in fresh snowfall every year. It is a highlight of my year.
Alisa and Qatar have a bond that every horse girl dreams of having with their horse. She can take Qatar out to his pasture, and using only her own body language and energy levels, she can easily control the young and spirited Arabian. She can push Qatar away from her, pull him closer, raise him into a rear, speed him up and slow him down. It’s as if they have a secret language for their choreographed dance.
I’ll be honest, this kind of bond with a horse is something so rare and beautiful, that I am always torn. I want to appreciate the beauty of it, as it’s happening, without the distraction of my camera. But I also want them to dance together all day for me to photograph it.
The day we photographed, the snow was deep and our time limited due to the temperatures, and the fact that Alisa was also running around in the snow with heavy boots on! 😆 These images were captured within 15 minutes, but I will be enjoying the emotions and movement of their authentic bond through theses photos, until the next time we play.
