I was a little dumbstruck when Emily said that she hadn’t had professional photos of her and her haflinger, Crumble, for 11 years. It made me more eager to capture all, Equine Portraits, her bond with Crumble on the ground, AND their teamwork and accomplishments under saddle.
When an animal becomes a family member, you absolutely need regular photos of, or with them!
When I arrived at the barn, our plans were to photograph Emily and Crumble, but her cardigan corgi, Theo, was scampering around on squirrel patrol, and if you have followed me for a while, you know I have my own corgi, and am obsessed with them! It was a no-brainer to include Theo in a few photos as well.
We started with Equine Portraits, as these tend to be easiest to capture when the horse is still newly curious to our toys to get ears up. We then ventured down the property, photographing posed and more candid moments. Ruth Hogan-Poulsen, Emily’s good friend and dressage coach, then joined us to give Emily a 20 minute lesson while I photographed their movements under saddle. This is a wonderful way to ensure the riders can be coached, from a familiar friend, who knows their current strengths to highlight in the photos. It was a wonderful opportunity to capture a few photos of them together too, as we all know the important of a great riding instructor, and the friendships that result from that team work.
These are a few of my favorite photos from the 1 1/2 photoshoot!
