The Silvernail Herd

Liberty shoots have always been something the Silvernail’s have wanted, but each time I visit, we somehow get distracted with riding, jumping, or connection shots between the girls and their horses. We waited and waited for the perfect amount of snow to fall, and after what seemed to be forever, the snow finally arrived!! And as an added bonus, the sun decided to make an appearance! I called up the Silvernail’s and was to their house bright and early, just in time to photograph their small herd of horses as they stretched their legs in the newly whitened landscape.

We first ran the boys, the pony Minute and his younger partner in crime, Indi. They seemed to fly across the snow, dancing in the sunlight, breathing in the crisp air, breathing out a warm smoke that hugged their silhouettes.

We didn't plan to photograph the girls with their horses, but sometimes the candid moments are too precious not to photograph. These are their every day memories, and I was thankful to photograph their relationships with each horse. Plus, the horses need a good praise for gallivanting through the snow so wonderfully for me!

Next up was the girls, Sugar and Daisy! Sugar has always intrigued me with the white spots that are magically appearing throughout her coat as she ages. It is a color change I have never seen before and I wish I knew more about the reasoning behind this effect. It makes her unique, and despite her shyness, fun to photograph!

This shoot was especially fun for me because Sugar, their oldest mare, gave birth to Indi on their farm. Being able to photograph a mother and son, creating images that mirrored each other in conformation or memory was something the girls will treasure forever.
