It’s been nearly a decade since I last photographed Kristine and her welsh cob, Derek. When I was freelancing for SmartPak, they would mail me products to photograph on horses, majority of which being winter blankets. Derek was one of my models, and ended up being published multiple times for SmartPak, and than again for Horse Illustrated several years later.
I was overjoyed to receive an email from Kristine, catching up on their adventures and where life has taken them. Derek was unfortunately recovering from an injury, but thankfully was doing considerably better after several months of quality rehab.
Our session was set to catch the last sunset rays after the bustle of Seahorse Stables daily lessons were completed for the day. We began with more formal photos, quickly changing directions to photograph their relaxed relationship that went well beyond their training schedule. Derek moved throughout the arena with a bounce in his tail, happy to be with his favorite gal. He kicked up his heels, showing off his outgoing personality, but his ear would flicker toward Kristine when she whispered his name. He spun, tossed his head, and came directly to her, eager to be by her and excited to be her partner in anything she asked of him.
Although life has taken them in a different direct than originally planned, together they are happy. They have a bond and love for one another that every horse girl dreams of having, one that will connect them for years to come.
