I have had the pleasure of photographing Cricket several times over the past year. Every time I begin photographing, I start with a game plan and check list of images I want to capture. And every time I get distracted by Cricket’s playfulness, sucked into her own exuberant adventures, and end up coming home with a completed different set of images then planned! The resulting collection always makes me laugh, and it leaves me eager for another playdate with Cricket.
This time, we started out playing in the back fields of Curtis Performance Horse. Cricket bounced through the snow and despite her dedication to playing fetch, she quickly lost the ball in the deep snow. We searched for several minutes, chocking it up to a loss cause, and headed out further to play on the old cross country jumps.
Cricket hopped on and off and over the jumps with such excitement and happiness that my cheeks were starting to hurt from smiling and laughing at her goofiness. With much convincing, we got Cricket to stand up on the jump, and as I lay below her in the snow, I was able to get her to look questionably down at my camera. Her ears hung low, pulled down by the wrinkles on her head, and her lips got loose as she tried so hard to resist jumping on top of me, licking my face from one ear to the other.
After a few minutes of playing, we got her back up on another jump to capture some gorgeous silhouettes against the blue skies, before Cricket got distracted by my mittens poking out of my camera bag. They were calling her name, and with a wagging tail and mischievous look, she snatched one, laughing at us as she played keep away, zooming in a circle around us. We traded my mitten for a snack and another break of play time in the snow before photographing a few posed images.
Some sessions I succeed on capturing the beauty of the dog against the landscape, some I return home with stunning images instilling the love between the dog and their owner, and others - like Cricket’s session- I am able to perfectly photograph the dog’s lovable personality and all their silly quirks! This is one of the many reasons why I love my job.
Here are a few of my favorites from Cricket’s session!
