It is a huge compliment to photograph for the same clients time and time again! Max, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is the third corgi I have photographed for this family, who travels clear across the state to North Muskegon to have each of their dogs photographed individually through the year!
Max was uniquely different from the other corgis, not as biddable and often sneaking out of sit or down stays when his owner turned her back. His hip-hop gait and broad smile as he skipped away from her would make me giggle, exciting Max even more as he scampered to me for another face washing and an update on the stash of dog treats I had in my pocket. It was hard to be anything but in love when he was so gosh darn cute!
Whenever I photograph an animal, I focus on keeping the dog willing and happy throughout the session. Max was happy to explore in a new location, and several times upon asking if Max could pose in a specific area, his owner was doubtful. I encouraged her to give it a try, and if it works, great! If not, we will regear and look for something or somewhere Max is more willing to pose! More often than not, we’re able to convince the dogs that our requests are fun and well rewarded, capturing a variety of poses and expressions throughout portraits and action shots in a variety of lighting and locations, Max included.
We photographed throughout the wooded trails, using trees and fences to incorporate lines and lighting into the images, then ventured down the sand dunes to the shores of Lake Michigan, where we photographed Max in a subtle landscape filled with tones of brown and white, matching his sable coat perfectly. Max zoomed back and forth along the shoreline, head hung low like a bear, filling his nose with unfamiliar scents. You could tell he was thrilled for the adventurous evening, and I, myself, in love with yet another corgi!
