One of my favorite reasons of being a dog photographer, is that I get to meet a variety of dog breeds, that range from companions, to show dogs, to sporting dogs! I will admit it, I am a nerd when it comes to learning about dog breeds, their history, their specialties, and their personalities. And when I get to meet a new breed and breed advocates, it is the highlight of my week!

Wendy has been involved with breeding and hunt training Spinone Italianos, for a very long time, and when she inquired about a photoshoot with her two dogs, Dreamer and Navigator, I was super excited! I immediately went down the rabbit hole of learning about this breed. Here is what I learned!

The Spinone originated from Italy, and believed to be crossed with setters, mastiff and french griffons. They are incredible hunting companions that have the ability to retriever from water or land, and are considered an “all weathered” dog due to their thicker skin and single, wiry coat. They are praised for having a sociable and docile temperament for families, but the endurance, superior nose and gentle mouth for hunting.

The two Spinones I had the pleasure of photographing, were gentle giants, happy to be around their owners, a bit aloof to the boring obedience for posed photos, but thriving with passion for hunting when allowed free play time. They seemed happy to be along for the fun, and loyal to their owners, always passing by with a smile when playing.

I hope to have the opportunity to photograph more Spinones, either through portraits, actions, or while hunting! These were my favorite photographs from our session, photographed at Eastmanville Farm County Park, Coopersville, Michigan.
